Taking the bus

Picture
Taking the bus doesn't just mean commuting to work. Linden Hills is on Bus Route #6 which can take you to Southdale to shop, or Uptown for dinner; to the Walker for some browsing, or the Twins Stadium for a game. Make a day of a trip downtown - you can check out the downtown library, stroll along the downtown farmer's market on a Thursday, shop or meet a downtown friend for lunch. If you're really feeling adventurous, branch out from the 6 and explore all sorts of fun destinations throughout the Twin Cities. On Metrotransit.org find your route with the Trip Planner application. Enter your starting address and drop in your desired end-destination - it really couldn't be simpler.

I love the bus!!
We (my wife, daughter, daughter's friend, my son and I) took the bus to the Aquatennial parade last week. It was a blast. Everyone had a great time. I was able to talk and visit with my family and neighbors (many were headed to the parade) in a way that I could not have had I been driving and paying attention to the road. We also had a great chance to reconnect with a couple of neighbors that I haven't had a chance to see in a long time, while riding on the bus. My youngest son (10) was proud to be able to pay for his own trip. We had a great opportunity to enjoy the short walk to the stop, stop for light refreshments at Dunn Bros on the way there and make great memories for a nice night in the city! I have a strong feeling that we will be making the bus be our transportation alternative more often in the future. BTW we loved our driver and her personality on the way downtown. Thank you Metro Transit for a great experience! -- Regards, Patrick, Cindy, Martina, Sophie and Leonardo
Savings!
I have been riding the bus for over 20 years and still get that good feeling by leaving my car in the garage in 2011. In 2010 I only put 4210 miles on my car. Insurance wise, my car is a lesure vehicle not a commuter vehicle. Check out how much you would save. --Clayton

So by LHP&L calculations, your gas use for the year was probably less than $800 -fantastic! MNN has an interesting article about the top 12 worst cars for 2011 -it includes the Chevy Suburban K2500 and its cousin, the GMC Yukon XL K2500, that average 10 mpg in the city and 15 on the highway. If gas prices reach $4/gallon, it would cost $156 to fill the 39-gallon tank. Drivers who fill up once a week would spend more than $8,000 on fuel in a year. Time to consider the bus Suburban drivers!
Using the Bike Rack
Using the bike rack can be intimidating the first time. But it's actually pretty simple -there's instructions on the rack and you can see step by step instructions here: http://metrotransit.org/bicycle-racks-on-buses-and-trains.aspx

I love take the bus with my bike. I take it from Mpls. to Deephaven, MN and get off l/2 mile from work where I bike. The bus doesn't return in the afternoon (bummer, big bummer), but I ride my bike to my car in St. Louis Park at the park and ride.
I've been using my card and I'm going to recharge it today. I'm hybrid biking/transiting as much as possible. I use the time on the bus to catch up online. Thanks for getting me started - great idea!
Hassle Free trip to the Airport
Toting our little wheelie carry-ons, we catch the #46 bus on 50th street, transfer to the light rail train at the 46th st. station, and zip over to the airport. This is cheap and easy!

Compare the cost of a cab to the airport (which with tip from Linden Hills is about $45) to the less than $5 for bus and light rail. And no parking issues! If you have the time, it's THE hassle free way to get there!
