Join In the Fun!

This is your chance to be part of Linden Hills Power & Light! We believe environmental responsibility begins at home, so we’re making changes at the neighborhood level. So far we’ve started the city’s first curbside recycling of organic waste. We’re working on developing a Neighborhood Energy Garden where organic waste will be processed locally and used to power an attached greenhouse to grow food locally. We want to start more green projects and we need you to help make that happen. Click here to become a member today and join the green movement in your neighborhood. Because saving the environment begins at home!

Benefits include special member-only events, free admission to our speaker series (see below), neighborhood pride and a warm feeling inside.

Deep Retrofitting of Old Houses
A Deep Energy Reduction Retrofit (DERR) project will cut 70% or more of the energy use of buildings. You'll also learn about the Passive House building energy standard. Passive House represents today's highest certified building energy standard, with the promise of reducing the total energy consumption of buildings by up to 90% while providing superior comfort and indoor environmental quality - all at little or no additional up front cost. When combined with renewable energy systems such as solar photovoltaic or solar thermal, Passive House puts true zero energy buildings and carbon neutrality within reach. Tim Eian, AIA TE studio.

Windows for your Soul
Considering new windows? Not all replacement window products qualify for the tax credit.  Learn what a "u-value" is and what Solar Heat Gain Co-efficiency (SHGC) number you need to look for. Are new windows the right solution? Old windows can perform as good as or better than new windows and even a good new window will last only 25 years or so. Window restoration specialist Erin Hanafin Berg - from the Preservation Alliance
can show you how to fix your own windows - and how to tell if they should be replaced. Click here for a pdf of this presentation.

Nov 10 7PM- Solar So Good
Considering solar hot water or photo voltaics? Will the renewable energy credit make the ROI more attractive? Learn what sort of roof angle, tree cover and aspect would make your site most attractive for solar. Can't afford solar panels -what about joining a community co-op to lower the cost? Each participant gets a return based on what they put in.  Guest speaker Ralph Jacobson is a NABCEP certified installer for both solar electric and solar thermal systems, one of only a few installers in Minnesota and Wisconsin that can make that claim. Ralph is a board member of the Minnesota Renewable Energy Society and the President of the Minnesota Solar Energy Industries Association (MnSEIA).

Feb TBC -
Getting Fresh  (Movie: "Fresh" - 1 hour)
FRESH celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet.  FRESH features urban farmer and activist, (and LHP&L hero) Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur's 2008 Genius Award; and sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollan's book, The Omnivore's Dilemma.

March TBC - The Power of Community -How Cuba Survived Peak Oil (Movie 1 hr)
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half - and food by 80 percent - people were desperate. This film tells of the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis - the massive reduction of fossil fuels - is an example of options and hope.

What is Linden Hills Power and Light?

It's a group of Linden Hills residents committed to impacting the fight on global warming, by acting locally first, then globally. We want to make our community an example to the rest of Minneapolis – by engaging our neighbors and moving them to action.

Why have members?

Opening LHP&L to paid memberships will grow the organization, raise additional funds and increase the number of programs it can sustain. It also allows us to find people that are just waiting to share their talents with the rest of us, and identify skillsets that are begging to be utilized. (Or you can just cheer us on, that's fine too).

What exactly do you do?

We meet and work with the city, county and other entities on your behalf to ensure we can bring innovative programs to our neighborhood like the compost pilot. We also work with numerous non profit groups to determine whether we can collaborate on initiatives that will enhance our community and fulfill our mission of reducing our local carbon footprint, building community, reducing waste and conserving energy.

We keep up with all the latest advancements and reports on the environment so we can be your resource on what’s happening in that area. We read magazines like Biocycle (the bible for garbage and composting) so you don’t have to. And we attend conferences and take field trips to facilities in other cities so we can bring best practices back to Linden Hills.

Some of our achievements include:

  • About 25 volunteers (including LHP&L board members) distributed 1800 free CFLs to the neighborhood to educate residents on how easy it is to take small steps that have big impact on climate change
  • Held a series of workshops through the local community education department including an intro to Anaerobic digestion, composting and how to dispose of household hazardous waste
  • Secured a grant from the MN Pollution Control Agency to create a feasibility study on an urban anaerobic digester.
  • Established a curbside compost collection in the neighborhood by the City of Minneapolis with help from Hennepin County.
  • Worked with Edina Morningside Neighborhood Group to encourage their compost pilot
  • Held a “Green Carpet Film festival” where filmmakers across the Twin Cities made 2 minute videos on combating climate change
  • Provided assistance to the East Calhoun neighborhood to start their curbside collection
  • Trained kids at Marcy School on composting their lunchroom waste
  • Nominated volunteers Keren Price and Fred Mayer to spearhead Lake Harriet Community School’s compost program
  • Currently working on establishing composting at Southwest High School

Ok, you've convinced me. I definitely want to support a worthy cause, that is not only noble and pure, but in MY neighborhood! Where do I send my check?

Complete the form here and mark check payable to Linden Hills Power and Light. Send to LHP&L, 2720 W 43rd St #101. Minneapolis MN 55410. Or you can bring the form and check to our Linden Hills Live table July 16th or to any one of our speaker series events.

About the Minnesota GreenStar Certification Program
The green certification program for home remodeling and building (officially called Minnesota GreenStar Certified Green Homes and Remodeling) created a rigorous set of standards. The program and its guidelines were created through a consortium of private and public groups, including The Green Institute, NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry of Minnesota), BATC (Builders Association of the Twin Cities) and many other organizations, including the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).

Minnesota GreenStar standards are based on guidelines that emphasize a whole-systems approach to new construction and provide details on how to achieve these goals by applying the five key concepts of Green Building to the eight components of the traditional building process.

The key concepts of Green Building are:

  • Energy Efficiency
  • Resource Efficiency (including Durability)
  • Indoor Environmental Quality
  • Water Conservation
  • Site Management and Use

The eight components of the traditional building process are:

  • Outdoor and Site
  • Building Envelope and Systems
  • Mechanicals
  • Electrical and Lighting
  • Plumbing Systems and Fixtures
  • Finish Materials and Coatings
  • Waste Management
  • Education
